G'day Horst,
DoHA have done this lots. I have had a couple of incidents here and know of
at least six others in my region.
DoHA are required to provide a 19AB exemption for all Oversea's Trained
Doctors. After ten years practicing in Australia you are exempt from this
ludicrous requirement.
DoHA's appropriate phone number is (02) 6289-5903, last time I checked the
person in authority was Janet Hill-Burgess. She didn't help me so I
contacted the Health Minister's office on (02) 6277 7220 and spoke to the GP
liaison officer. I got what I needed in hours, not days. This has worked for
some of the others too.
DoHA have this thing where they CAN take 28 days and so they like to. For a
continuing doctor's provider number this is utter rubbish.
Good luck.
Oh yeah - this is for Dorrigo. Nice town Dorrigo.

I was just informed that my Medicare proivider number expired on Sunday, and
that all PBS scripts I worte yesterday and today have to be paid in full by
the patients (no PBS subsidy), and that th patients will not receive any MBS
benefits for their consultations yesterday and today
I sent in my renewal application more than a month ago, and teh Medicare
provider section informed me on the phone 10 minutes ago that they indeed
received the application forwarded it to the DoHA last Tuesday and haven't
heard from them since.
Important: there is no reason whatsoever not to renew the provider number I
had for the past 5 years - it is just bureaucratic delay caused by
departmental incompetence, laziness and procrastination which has already
once (7 years ago) cost me a whole month of MBS income
That will in fact leave Dorrigo incl. the whole Dorrigo Plateau (semi
isolated
area with some 4,000 patients) without medical services, because my part
time
ssociate will not work without my support
I would appreciate if anybody with influence, media, press would take this
matter up on behalf of myself and my patients, since the arrogant
bureaucracy
has decided not to be available to me on phone unless they can turf me off
to
yet another phone number and / or department. I had it, I quit. The
Australian health bureaucracy can play silly buggers without me, I have no
time for this nonsense.
Cheers,
Horst
