I have also had a provider number loss experience, I found threatening the 
media quite effective. 
[As a post-96er I am essentially in the same boat as Horst, until I get a 
fellowship.]
Most shocking of all is FRACGP would not offer me full protection from this 
crap, only a specialty fellowship allows me a "permanent" provider number 
like most of the list already have.
To clarify, for most list members, losing VR temporarily would mean drop in 
rebates, but you can still prescribe and and work until you get it back.
If a post-96er GP loses VR, ever, they would have to cease work immediately.

I'm not sure a PM would work in this case: Horst made this application well in 
advance, it was DoHA laziness.

Personally I would still go to the media, the fundamental point is a 
21-year-old TAFE graduate in a Canberra office can stop us working with the 
stroke of a pen, this simply has to stop.

I found the AMA very helpful, they gained a life member out of that process.
