Windows ME can actually be the same, runs for years.
I bought a client several Compaq Ipaq's (mini desktops, not the
handheld
thingys which came later) running Win ME (much to my horror) and
installed
them on their reception desk.
Much to my amazement they were still going strong several years later
without being touched.
This can be done in a business environment where applications are
limited to a small number.
Likewise today, if you remove Internet Explorer from Win32 (not an
easy task) and run as a standard user (non-administrative, a lesson
from Unix) with a small defined application set, it's a remarkably
stable platform.
Combine this with the Novell rip-off best-of (Active Directory /
Group Policy) and the Citrix rip-off best-of (Terminal Services) and
it's possible to create a computing environment that is easy and
enjoyable to use and manage, using only Microsoft operating systems -
amazing but true!!!
cheers,
Peter.
