Windows ME can actually be the same, runs for years.
I bought a client several Compaq Ipaq's (mini desktops, not the handheld
thingys which came later) running Win ME (much to my horror) and installed
them on their reception desk.
Much to my amazement they were still going strong several years later
without being touched.
Peter M might know if they are still there or have they been replaced Pete ?

Jel

I spend days trying to get Windows machines up and keep them running.

Today my linux box wouldn't connect to the net. I if-down and up ed,
.../networking restart ed, and adsl-stop ped and adsl-start ed. Nothing
worked. I even rebooted, which made no difference, of course. Then I
turned the modem off and on again and got connectivity. So it wasn't the
linux box at all.

It is said linux is hard to configure and that is true for Windows users
since it's different. However, once set it will run for years.
