I'd be interested to get your final impressions of VBox versus Xen. It seems like the new virtualisation technologies are superior in performance to VMWare but not as mature and will take a little while to catch up.

I haven't done formal testing but have decided on Xen, which wins on several counts:

Networking can be setup with much less hassle.
The console.
The Xen server distribution. It's fast and locked down, and very quick to install and setup in a pinch.
Bigger, more active community.

I haven't downloaded yet but 3.1 (http://www.xensource.com/download/index_oss.html) came out last week.

This should do the live migration we talked about.

I am specing up for a 64 bit box that will be OK to run 32 bit or 64 bit Windows servers.

See here http://enterpriselinuxlog.blogs.techtarget.com/2007/05/31/xen-31-xenenterprise-and-rhel/ for just one of the reviews that are now floating around the net.

Cheers.
