Another incorrect assumption.

May I suggest to avoid creating dependencies to bleeding-edge platform
software, and to rather attempt to stick to the principle of falling back
gracefully if the platform lacks a feature?  The approach you explain in your
comment seems to go into the right direction – but perhaps it's unwise to rely
on a particular desktop environment's features in the first place?

  $ echo $KDE_FULL_SESSION
  true

  $ echo $KDE_SESSION_VERSION
  KDE_SESSION_VERSION: Undefined variable.
