I have been using a rhino script to do the same thing, but with meshes rather than surfaces. It seems to take roughly the same amount of time that you describe. However, I have found that it runs almost instantly if I minimize rhino after I start the script. I don't know why this is the case, and I don't know how implementable this would be for a script in GH, but I'd give it a shot.
