For 2006-2007, the Centre did not provide for this reservation following a 2005 apex court judgment, which said the 50 per cent all-India quota should be exclusive of reservation. As a result, reservation was provided only under the 50 per cent State quota. Additional-Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam told a Bench, comprising Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justices K.G. Balakrishnan and C.K. Thakker, that the matter required urgent consideration as the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences would conduct the entrance examinationon January 14 and the results would be declared in February. The Bench also issued notice to the original petitioner. Emotional farewell This was the last order passed by Justice Sabharwal, who retires on Saturday. Those assembled in the court gave him an emotional farewell. Mr. Gopal Subramanian said: "We have been greatly privileged to argue matters in this court. You presided over the court with distinction and treated the members of the Bar with courtesy at all times. On behalf of the Bar I wish you good health." Thanking the Bar, an emotional Justice Sabharwal said: "I had the best assistance from all of you and I will cherish this in memory." Thereafter he retired to his chamber. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Ours is a battle not for wealth or for power. It is a battle for freedom.
