Dear friends,
Two things I want to say
Suicides don't happen in a vacuum. And it cannot be understood in an
isolated manner, as any other human actions. It is an act (Thanks to
Durkheim), which is very much rooted in the socio political
conditions. Look at the suicides of women loving women in Kerala, many
of them belonged to Dalit Adivasi families. There was a pattern in
those suicides; it was not the love which forced them to commit
suicides, but the societal attitudes and the violence of homophobia.
In a society where one cannot live with dignity, in a system which
doesn't provide any social security, one doesn't have to look for the
reasons in the 'enquiry report'.
Deepak looks at Rajani Anand as a 'student' who has no other
identities, which is actually not the case. There are multiple
discriminations a dalit woman goes through in life in general and in
the education system. Even in liberal universities/colleges there are
many documented and undocumented cases of violence against Dalit
students. This violence happens on an every day basis. And I don't
see any golden opportunities or encouragement existing in Kerala for a
dalit woman student. For the privileged all spaces are neutral and
liberal but that is not the case for many others.
It is a pity that our conversation also carry some sort of
post-mortem of Rajani, instead of desecting the casteisst society.
Though nobody can claim the 'real reason' behind a suicide, I strongly
believe that the social environment in progressive Kerala is not
inclusive for everybody. And Rajani's suicide should be seen in this
context.

"...ironically, perhaps, the best organised dissenters in
the world today are anarchists, who are busily
undermining capitalism while the rest of the left is
still trying to form committees."
