Sudeep, I agree with you that this is a thin line. However, I don't agree with the 'people spontaneously rising against oppression' theory of Maoist (or any other terrorist) violence. These movements are orchestrated by foreign powers or by networks abroad (as in the case of Khalistan and Kashmir) with deep pockets and suave apologists in the media and the intelligentsia. That said, it is not that people in Maoist affected areas have no grievances. It is very difficult to kick start a violent movement in places where people have absolutely no grievances (difficult, but not impossible, as evidenced by Punjab). In the absence of an extreme ideology and the infrastructure to support it, no violent movement can be sustained. People won't kill and get killed for nothing.
But the trouble with extreme movements is that the violence they engender will come back to the very people in whose name the movement is started. It happened in Punjab. It is happening today in Kashmir. Most of Maoists' victims are poor adivasis, not rich landlords. > Can you and me distance ourselves and escape the responsibility of > causing that violence on these victims? As an Indian citizen, I absolutely refuse to share the blame for the violence perpetrated on the innocent citizens of this country. Yes, there are lots of problems in India, as in any other country. But are we suggesting that people who randomly kill innocent citizens of this country need understanding? It is of course understandable what drives a young victim of Zamindari violence who wants to hit back at his landlord, or some victim of Gujarat riots wishing physical harm on Narendra Modi. But what about random violence perpetrated on citizens? What about the Mumbai train bombers? Best regards, Murali.
