*When Media plays the Joker*
One general response from the media to a 'Justice to Chithalekha' press
release (which was signed by many prominent people) demanding inquiry into
an incident of a woman autorickshaw driver being beaten up by the public and
the police was that 'let us not take sides now, we should know the truth'.
Another one was that 'she was drunk and created ruckus, do not make it a
Dalit issue'. (None of the newspapers carried any mention of the press
release.)
The second one was in sync with the below three reports, probably the only
mentions about the incident in the print media. Two of them in evening
dailies, one in CPM paper Deshabhimani. All three of them report *
conflicting* CITU/Police versions:

പയ്യന്നൂര്: മധ്യരാത്രിയില് നഗരത്തിലെത്തിയ യുവതിയുടെ വിളയാട്ടത്തില്
ഗതാഗതം സ്തംഭിച്ചു. പെരുമ്പ ഓട്ടോ സ്റ്റാന്ഡിലായിരുന്നു സംഭവം. എടാട്ട്
സ്വദേശിനിയായ യുവതിയാണ് മദ്യലഹരിയില് നടുറോട്ടില് പേക്കൂത്തുകള് കാട്ടിയത്.
ഇന്ന് രാവിലെ യുവതിയുടെ ഓട്ടോ ഡ്രൈവറായ ഭര്ത്താവ് മദ്യപിച്ച് വാഹനവുമായി
സ്റ്റാന്ഡിലെത്തിയപ്പോള് മറ്റു ഡ്രൈവര്മാര് ഇയാളെ തിരിച്ചയച്ചിരുന്നു.
ഇതിന്റെ വിരോധത്തില് മദ്യപിച്ചെത്തിയ യുവതി ഡ്രൈവര്മാരെ തെറി
പറയുകയായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീടാണ് റോഡിലിറങ്ങി ഗതാഗതം തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തിയത്.
സ്ഥലത്തെത്തിയ പോലീസ് പിന്നീട് യുവതിയെ കസ്റ്റഡിയിലെടുത്തു.

Drunken woman’s antics
*Payyannur: A drunken young woman’s tantrums halted traffic in the city. The
incident happened in Perumba auto stand. The woman hails from Edat. Her
autodriver husband was asked to return from the stand in the morning by
other drivers as he was drunk. Angered by this, the young woman came drunk
and abused other drivers. After that she ventured into the road and
interrupted traffic. Police came and took her under custody. *

പൊതു നിരത്തില് ബഹളം വച്ചതിനു ഓട്ടോ ഡ്രൈവര് ചിത്രലേഖയ്ക്കും ഭര്ത്താവിനും
എതിരെ കേസ്
പൊതു നിരത്തില് ബഹളം വച്ചതിനു വനിതാ ഓട്ടോ ഡ്രൈവര് ചിത്രലേഖയ്ക്കും
ഭര്ത്താവിനും എതിരെ പയ്യന്നൂര് പോലീസ് കേസ് എടുത്തു. ഇന്ന് രാവിലെ പെരുമ്പ
ബസ് സ്റ്റോപ്പിനടുത്തുവച്ചാണ് സംഭവം. രണ്ടുപേര്ക്കെതിരെയും പെറ്റിക്കേസ്
രജിസ്റ്റര് ചെയ്തതിനു ശേഷം പോലീസ് വിട്ടയച്ചു. ചിത്രലേഖയുടെ ഭര്ത്താവ്
ശ്രീഷ്കാന്ത് ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷയുമായി പെരുമ്പയില് ഓട്ടം പോകാന് എത്തിയതായിരുന്നു.
ശ്രീഷ്കാന്ത് മദ്യപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നു പറഞ്ഞ് സ്റ്റാന്ഡിലെ മറ്റു ഡ്രൈവര്മാര്
ഇയാളെ തടഞ്ഞു വയ്ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. തുടര്ന്ന് ഇയാള് ബഹളം വച്ചു. വിവരമറിഞ്ഞ്
എത്തിയ ചിത്രലേഖയും ബഹളത്തില് പങ്കാളിയാവുകയായിരുന്നു. പോലീസ് ഇരുവരെയും
കസ്റ്റഡിയിലെടുത്ത് സ്റ്റേഷനില് എത്തിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇവിടെയും ചിത്രലേഖയും
ഭര്ത്താവും ബഹളം തുടര്ന്നു.
പയ്യന്നൂര് ഗവ. ആശുപത്രിയില് നടത്തിയ പരിശോധനയില് ശ്രീ മദ്യപിച്ചിരുന്നു
എന്ന് തെളിഞ്ഞു. തുടര്ന്ന് ഇരുവര്ക്കുമെതിരെ പെറ്റിക്കേസ് രജിസ്റ്റര് ചെയ്ത
ശേഷം വിട്ടയച്ചു.

Auto driver Chithralekha and husband charged for creating a ruckus in public

Chithalekha and her husband. The incident happened near Perumba bus stand.
The police charged a petty case against them and let them go. Chithalekha's
husband Sreeshkanth had come to Perumba with his auto for his regular run.
Other drivers blocked him, alleging that he was drunk. Then he created
noice. Chithralekha came to the place hearing about the incident, and got
involved in the ruckus. Police took both of them into custody and took them
to station. The two continued their brawl in the police station also.
A medical examination done at Payyannur Govt. Hospital showed that
Shreeshkanth was drunk. Following this, the police charged petty case
against both of them and let go. *

പയ്യന്നൂര്: ഓട്ടോ സ്റ്റാന്ഡില് ബഹളമുണ്ടാക്കിയ ഓട്ടോ ഡ്രൈവറായ യുവതിയെയും
ഭര്ത്താവിനെയും പോലീസ് പിടികൂടി. പെരുമ്പ ചന്തയ്ക്കു സമീപം ഓട്ടോ
സ്റ്റാന്ഡില് ബുധനാഴ്ച രാവിലെയാണ് സംഭവം. ക്യൂവിന് മുന്നില് നിര്ത്തിയ
ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷ മാറ്റണം എന്ന് സ്റ്റാന്ഡിലെ ഡ്രൈവര്മാര് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള്,
മദ്യലഹരിയിലായിരുന്ന ചിത്രലേഖയുടെ ഭര്ത്താവും ചിത്രലേഖയും കൂടി,
സ്റ്റാന്ഡില് ബഹളം വയ്ക്കുകയും ഓട്ടോ ഡ്രൈവര്മാരെ ചീത്ത വിളിക്കുകയും
ചെയ്തു. ഈ സമയം ഇതുവഴി വന്ന പോലീസ് ചിത്രലേഖയെയും ഭര്ത്താവിനെയും
കസ്റ്റഡിയിലെടുത്തു. പോലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷനില് എത്തിയിട്ടും ചിത്രലേഖയും ഭര്ത്താവും
പരാക്രമം കാട്ടി. ഇരുവരുടെയും പരാക്രമം കണ്ട് ധാരാളം ആളുകള് സ്റ്റേഷനില്
തടിച്ചുകൂടി.

*Payyannur: Police caught the woman auto driver and her husband who created
ruckus at the auto stand. The incident happened on Wednesday morning at the
auto stand near Perumba market. The auto drivers demanded that the auto
parked in front of the queue be removed. In response to this, Chithalekha
and her drunk husband created a brawl and shouted abuses at the auto
drivers. The police reached the place and took Chithalekha and her husband
into custody. Both Chithralekha and her husband continued their antics in
the police station also. Many people gathered at the station to have a look
at their antics.*

Some say she was drunk, another say it was her husband who was drunk. Some
say that the fight was about drinking, while another say it was about
parking.
The reports also give "information" that there was a case charged against
Chithralekha, when there was none.
Nobody who wants to 'find the truth' has spoken to Chithalekha to find what
she has to say. (Needless to say, none of the above reports even mention her
side of the story -- even a passing mention "Chithalekha said..'). And so
naturally all of them squarely put the blame on Chithra. None of the
newspaper reporters ever called her up even after the whole signature
campaign.
Some respected (male) progressive individuals responded that "she was drunk,
she does not have a way out in this". (Those people were drunk when they
said that, but it is women who should not drink and should not get into
fights).
What gives one the right to beat up a woman in public? Some adjectives like
"drunk", "immoral" and some keywords like "ruckus' and "antics" would
suffice for a justification? ("Immoral" part from the local CITU people --
not in these reports. Probably hinting at the fact that this is her second
marriage).
And why did Chithalekha create a ruckus? Does anybody dare to / care to find
that out, rather than buying the popular CPM/CITU versions?
