[The national newspapers are carrying full-page ads today, on top of the
earlier ones, displaying benignly smiling faces of the Indian Prime
Minister juxtaposed with that of the incumbent Gujarat Chief Minister, to
announce: "Gujarat launches South Asia's first of its kind world class RORO
ferry service (Phase I) for passengers".
Modi calls it "his dream project" and his "invaluable gift to India" (ref.
the report at sl. no. I below).

Interestingly, a RoRo ferry service was launched by the Kochi Corporation,
inaugurated by its Mayor, Soumini Jain, about a year back, November last
year (ref. the report at sl. no. II below).
And, Goa, apparently, got its first Ro-Ro ferry service back in 2011 (ref.:

Truly, 'Jumlon ki Baarish'!!!

The first phase of the Ro-Ro ferry service in Gujarat is meant for
passengers
GANDHINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in his home state Gujarat for
the third time this month to launch various projects -- including the Rs.
650-crore "roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro)" ferry service, which he described as
his "dream project". Assembly elections in the state will be held later
this year - the dates are expected to be announced after the visit. From
Bhavnagar district's Ghogha, he went to Dahej in Bharuch in the
newly-launched the ferry service. His next stop is Vadodara, where he will
inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for developmental and
infrastructure projects worth over Rs. 1,140 crore.

Here are the Top 10 updates on this big story:

1. Describing it as his dream project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said
the ferry service was his "invaluable gift to India" and claimed that the
even for South-East Asia, this was the first project of its size. "This
programme may be for a ferry between Ghogha and Dahej, but it is of vital
importance for the entire nation," the Prime Minister said.

2. The 31-km ferry service between Ghogha and Dahej in the Gulf of Cambay,
will cut travel time from nearly eight hours to one. The on-road distance
between the two towns will be down from 310 km to 30 km. The ferry service
will hugely benefit the people working in the diamond-cutting and polishing
hub of Surat.

3. Ajay Bhadoo, Chief Executive Officer of the Gujarat Maritime Board which
is executing the Ro-Ro project, said the first phase of the service is
meant for passengers. In the second phase - which will be rolled out in two
months - the boats will be able to ferry cars. In the final phase, it would
also have the facility to carry trucks.

4. The idea of a ferry service dates back to early 1960s. But it was
started in January 2012, when PM Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

5. Underscoring the need for better use of waterways, PM Modi said, Our new
mantra is "P for P -- Ports for Prosperity".

6. Taking a swipe at the Congress, the Prime Minister said when he was
serving as the Chief Minister of the state, he faced hostility from the
then Central Government. "Efforts were made to stall industries and the
state's growth. Over the last three years we have changed that and given
importance to the development of Gujarat," he added.

7. From Dahej, the Prime Minister will leave for Vadodara, where he is
scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for various
developmental and infrastructure projects worth over Rs. 1,140 crore.

8. The PM will also address a public meeting at the sprawling Navlakhi
Ground in the city in the afternoon and may hold a roadshow before flying
back to Delhi.

9. The Prime Minister has made multiple visits to Gujarat ahead of the
elections. He addressed a massive rally in capital Gandhinagar earlier this
week.

10. Last week, he inaugurated various projects in Rajkot, his hometown
Vadnagar, Gandhinagar and Bharuch.

Ro-Ro relief for islanders

KOCHI: As part of strengthening the water transport network of the
islanders, the Kochi Corporation, on Wednesday has rolled out a new
double-ended Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro)vessel on the Vypeen-Fort Kochi ferry
route. Mayor Soumini Jain launched the service at Cochin Shipyard, where
the vessel was constructed.

It was almost two years ago that the Corporation placed an order for making
two Ro-Ro vessels with the Shipyard. The estimated cost for each vessel is
Rs 3.8 crore. The second vehicle will also be rolled out soon, according to
the Corporation officials. The vessels are being rolled out with the
financial support of Kerala Urban and Rural Development Finance Corporation
(KURDFC).

The Corporation decided to replace the existing ferry with the new one as
the old vessel was single ended with engine and propulsion in the daft end
and ramp in the forward end. Normally all four wheelers have to parked in
the reverse order onboard the ferry so that it is easy to disembark at the
destination jetty.

Reverse parking of vehicles consumes considerable time resulting in long
queue of vehicles during peak hours. As a solution to this, the Ro-Ro
vessel- a double-ended ferry with propulsors and ramps at both ends of the
vessel was proposed. According to technical experts, the new ferry will
help the vehicles to move in one direction thereby reducing the time taken
for embarking or disembarking vehicles and also avoid turning of the vessel
while leaving the jetty.

The vessel is designed with Azimuth Propulsion system, fitted at both ends.
“This enables the vessel to be operated without having to turn around at
the jetty during cast off,” experts added. The ferry can attain a speed of
up to eight knots and take around three minutes to cross the 600-metre
distance between the two stations.

The new vessel is constructed as per the specifications stipulated by the
Indian Register of Shipping. The introduction of the ferries is expected to
help in easy transport of vehicles between the two boat jetties and also
save time and energy.
