In what sense are the packages "mandatory"?   The "build-essential" 
package is not automatically installed with Debian or Ubuntu; users who 
want to build packages need to add it.

Since ubuntu has not released a package for the new fontforge, I'll stay 
with the old font for now.   I've built an ubuntu system under vmware 
just for gregorio, and I'd like to keep it simple.

Perhaps it would be useful to add a shell script to the gregorio package 
to automate the steps  lamed-odvips-ps2pdf, to make it clear that the 
dvi output should not be considered as a usable product.
