luatextra is outdated for a few years, one should use fontspec, as in
the examples/main-lualatex.tex file (svn and tarball releases).
If it doesn't work, it's certainly due to an outdated TeXLive (or MacTeX
or MikTeX). TeXLive 2013 brings many interesting things, among which a
noticeable speed improvement.
If he doesn't want to use fontspec, he can use luaotfload, it should
work too.
