Thanks. When I try it with lamed now, I get the afore-mentioned infinite loop 
at the end of processing the file. I suspect my TeX installation is generally 
pooched.

I simply downloaded the gregorio-0.9.2 source from the website, gunzip'd, un-
tar'd./configure'd, and make'd.

However, while thinking about your question I remembered that I had tried to 
make gregorio-0.9.2 several times while discovering which packages were not 
installed on my system. Thinking that maybe I had wrecked something, I deleted 
the directory, unpacked again, and re-compiled.

Amazing how that works sometimes. It even fixed a couple of bugs I'd noticed 
in gregorio-0.9.1 ;-)
