Hello, I actually just saw this error the other day, when I last updated my MacTeX 2008 install. I haven't found the precise cause yet, but it went away after reverting to another luatex binary I had previously compiled (v. 0.31 or something). For some reason, when I ran tlmgr update on MacTeX, it 'updated' luatex back to a lower version number, which then gave font metric errors as above.
