FWIW I tried 0.38.0, which was also on my computer, and that works out-of-the-box too. 0.39 and then the current beta (0.40.0) need, at minimum, some ini file changes to work (discussion at http://tug.org/pipermail/luatex/2009-April/000745.html ).
