I can revisit this... is there a standard/expected distance in scores?
I don't have very many examples to compare with the output.

Centering with ǽ seems to work for me. The ë case should now be fixed.

I can add the information about Xcode on the website (I agree that
it's the easiest way to satisfy most of the build dependencies under
OS X).
