I'd avoid the gcc48 install for the moment. Part of Fr Tran's difficulty is my fault. I've already installed quite a few open source packages over the years and so I already have them. As he hits a snag, I'll look at what's missing. That way we'll have a minimalist set if packages that need to be installed via MacPorts.
