Dear all,
This is the background of my problem: Some long Psalm verses are subnumbered to better fit the liturgical use. For instance in Graduale Romanum 1974 the Communio "Qui biberit aquam" of Dom III Quadragesimae contains the (optional) Canticum Isaiae 12, 1. 2ab. 2cd. 3. 4ab. 4cd. 5. 6 where the biblical text, for example, verse 12:2 is further subnumbered to 2ab. and 2cd; so is 12:4 to 4ab & 4cd. The problem is: when I encode the verse with its subnumber, "2ab. Ecce Deus ..." as "2ab. Ec(ehg)ce(hi) De(i)us(i)", the first neum (ehg) will be wrongly placed on top of "2ab. Ec" as if it as a whole is one single syllable indicated by the code. I tried around and found that if I place a pair of empty bracket after the numbering, i.e. "2ab.() Ec(ehg)ce(hi) De(i)us(i)", it will work correctly. However, it looks to me like an "undocumented feature" which I cannot always rely on. Could someone tell me if there is a formal way to deal with the meta text? When there is only number in the lyrics, e.g. "5. Cantate Domino," it will be fine to encode it as something like "5. Can(ehg)ta(hi)te(i) Do(i)mi(i)no,(i)". The first neum (ehg) will be correctly placed right on top of the syllable "Can-", ignoring the prior number. Thanks in advance for your help. Michael Zhang Shanghai, China
