In Gregorio starting from 4.1-rc1 (to be released very soon), the syntax text() is considered so called "rubrical text", its use is mainly for case such as *() or Ps.() it centers the text between the previous and next syllable. I think this could be considered the "standard" behavior, but Gregorio being the only software to render gabc graphically (as far as I know), it is its own standard...
