If you don't have GrowlTunes installed, then it is not running. If it  
is not running, then it is not notifying.

If that's the case, then something else is posting the notifications  
(which means they are not GrowlTunes notifications). There are many  
applications that post Growl notifications about iTunes. Many of the  
apps in the Music section of our website are such apps:

        http://growl.info/applications.php?cat=Music

Also, Quicksilver offers this, if you installed its Growl notifier  
plug-in.
