We tried this early on, it was really jarring and pretty distracting. Growl notifications are meant to not to be distracting whenever possible, so it was counter to what we were trying to do.
I'd be open to trying it again, but I don't want anyone on the current dev team spending time on it if they aren't really open to it never being implemented, since we did try it before.
