It is perfectly acceptable to investigate the problem. We need to know everything we can about the problem before we can formulate a solution. If it does recover, what I suggest next is to start a screen recording in QuickTime Player X, then put the computer to sleep, then wake it up, wait for the system to recover, and then stop the recording. Play it back and tell us whether the recording shows the screen as frozen or shows things happening that you couldn't see happening at the time (i.e., whether the recording matches what you saw on the screen). Either way, please also send us the full console and system logs from one minute prior to sleep until either you got the system back or you restarted.
