Wow. You hit an interesting point that has come up several times since I got
this computer. This problem has nothing to do with Growl and I don't expect you
to take time to try and solve it for me. However, as a point of interest, I'll
explain a bit.

It seems like pref files frequently get corrupted, botching the operation of
either hardware or software. Started with old G4 iMac; refused to open
superdrive slider. Much talk on forums and all felt I had a dead drive. Needed
a bigger and faster computer anyway so good excuse to buy anew. Transferred all
data and new iMac wouldn't recognize its drive. 2 hours on phone with apple
and finally found source in HD→Library→Preferences. (But I'm not sure if it's
that one or the same file in the Home branch.) We deleted all but a few the
Apple rep said would be harmful to delete and the problem was solved. Later I
added them back, 20 at a time until I found the culprit wihch was a com.apple
file that dealt with the superdrive. Getting rid of that file fixed both my old
and new Mac. But I have had several problems since and all have been traced to
a file in the preferences folder. The last one, a TypeIt4Me file, was in the
Home pref folder. (Riccardo Ettore helped me out of that problem.) Makes me
wonder if there's something lurking that carried over from my old Mac that is
slowly eating my pref files. But that's the thoughts of someone not knowing a
lot about computers. When I've asked this question among knowledgeable folks
all say probably not, the pref files are problematic by themselves.

Also interesting, the USB thumb drive and the printer work just fine. Were it
not for HwG I wouldn't have been aware of the problem. the nearest Apple store
is 2 1/2 hrs away so I'll not get there soon. I purchased locally at one of the
Apple resellers. I don't know what their level of competence in repair/trouble
shooting is.

Thanks much for your help.
