It is possible the custom styles are causing the crash.
To check, we can try to load Growl with and without them.
They are stored in the Library/Application Support/Growl/Plugins folder (either 
your home folder, or hard rive root).
Just move them out of that folder, and try opening Growl in System Preferences. 
If it works, then you know it's one of the things you moved out. Try adding 
them in one-by-one and checking you can open the Growl Prefs each time; then 
you will know which one is causing the problem.
Once you know, you should probably contact the developer of that plugin, and 
let them know it's broken. Hopefully they will be able to fix it for you. :)
