thanks for the thread link. i'd searched for previous mentions of this
topic but came up empty-handed. the thread was very useful in terms of
the mechanisms of growl, most (but not all) of which i learned by
trial and error the past few months in playing with the software
itself. it's also clear from that thread that the developer's
philosophy is to focus on the end user and not necessarily the
sysadmin who'd like a simple method of messaging his colleagues.

your suggestion is a decent measure for sure, but, like you say, if a
user installs a different app that also uses the growl framework,
they'd start getting those alerts as well. but it's a start: at least
i can remove some of the most obvious "offenders". :)
