There is a relevant bug already on a file:

It already contains what they need to do, although the report is written for 
Firefox and doesn't mention Thunderbird. I don't know whether Thunderbird 
should have a new bug or not.

(Furthermore, I notice that the person who wrote the first comment on it wrote 
a message in one of the growl-development threads. So, it looks like they're 
working on it.)
