Open Activity Monitor and find out by searching for Growl. If you see Growl and GrowlHelperApp, that's the problem. http://growl.info/documentation/faq-new.php#1.3uninstallerafterinstall has some information on how to remove 1.3 and 1.2.2. Go ahead and run the uninstaller in step 5 even if the preferences aren't there in system preferences.
