GrowlHelperApp was the running process name of Growl 1.2.2 and below. When you
click start on Growl in System Preferences in 1.2.2, then GrowlHelperApp would
start up.

It sounds like this application hardcoded the process name, rather than looking
for applications associated with com.growl.growlhelperapp. Please contact those
developers to find out if they can resolve the issue. I honestly think they use
AppleScript to talk to Growl. If they do then
http://growl.info/documentation/applescript-support.php#growlisrunning would be
of some benefit to them.
