You do realize since 1.3 Growl provides notifications to applications
without growl having to be installed right? "Paid" growl is a control
center for notifications, but part of the notification code itself is
embedded into growl-enabled applications.

That does not even make sense, it's not in the growl team's interest
to make 1.3 worse than 1.2. Also, 1.3 is still free, the source code
is available and the license has not changed.
