FIXED!!

After having Growl 1.3.3 on one of my Macs working just fine and another
giving me the weird behavior of requiring 2 menu selections to get the
Settings window to open with no tabs and trying every nuanced
workaround/fix suggested in the relevant threads here with no change, I
took the meataxe approach.

I quit Growl and HardwareGrowler, dragged them from the Applications
folder to the trash and emptied it, found every file and directory in
~/Library and /Library related to Growl and gave them al the hearty rm -rf
they so richly deserved. Also ran 'defaults delete
com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp' and 'defaults delete com.growl.hardwaregrowler'
to be sure. Running 'ps auxwww|grep -i growl' gave me nothing now, and
neither did 'find ~/Library -name "*[gG]rowl*" so it was well and truly
dead and gone. I even Fired up the AppStore, went to Purchases, and as it
is supposed to do, it offered me me Growl and HardwareGrowler with active
Install buttons. CLICK! CLICK! wait…. wait… All downloaded and installed.
Ran the apps, and Growl now works just fine.

Yes, I have a few settings to redo following the Growlocaust I inflicted on
my system. But at least now I CAN.
