Sorry Derek, I'll have to correct you:

Gstat supports gridascii as one of it's map formats, along with ER-Mapper,
Idrisi, PCRaster, gridfloat (esri), GMT and Surfer (I always need the
manual to complete the list). In addition, GRASS maps and site lists are
now supported (in the 2.3.3 source snapshot, that is).

... which is sufficient to find out the x and y coordinate for each cell.
