This is something I just don't understand. It seems to me that the goals of
having the GTS as a road bike that you plan to ride for years, and doing
significant engine work for improved performance are fundamentally at odds with
each other. The GTS engine, being a de-tuned version of the FZR, is almost
certainly less stressed (and more reliable). I don't think that it's possible
to add more "engine" to the bike to make up for the size, weight, and "slow"
chassis geometry to make the bike more sporty, without also making it less
likely to be a long-term, high mileage street bike.
I rarely have a complaint with the GTS engine. Sure, I'd like a bit more
acceleration when I'm riding with a passenger and luggage and I'm chasing
friends who are solo on things like the XV650. On the other hand, getting to
the corner faster isn't going to make getting _through_ it on a 600+ lb bike
any easier. I'd rather shed 100lbs than add 25hp.
There are lots of things you can do to improve the GTS over a long
period (suspension components being the first that come to mind for me), but
I'd put major engine work very, very low on that list.
I'm not against making the GTS more of a hot rod, if that's what you want to
do, but I just don't think that it matches up well with your other goal.
