The "BOW" in the center of the rim is called a drop center. Its purpose is to ease installation and removal of the tire. After the bead is broken down on the tire, the bead of the tire is held in the center of the rim, which is smaller in diameter because of the "bow" and allows the opposite side of the tire to be more easilly levered over the rim. Any of you who have had trouble changing tires before should try getting both beads into the center of the rim before levering. RSRBOB
