I've done the same thing except used wood. They are 1.5 inches thick.
Like them so well I'm not going to change them yet.  Was planning to make
something a we bit thicker and with a tilt so to get a better adjustment on
the
angles to set the mirror's.  I believe 2 inches would be the best. Somebody
in the past had a better shaped design but have forgotten.
