I've recently ordered a set of Azaro II tires 120/70 and 170/60 which should
be in any day now. My last 2 sets of tires were Pirelli Dragons MTR03/04
(the old series) in the OE sizes which I was quite happy with, except I
didn't get very good mileage out of them last year. This year I narrowed my
search down to 4 brands/models that I believe are probably quite equal
(Pirelli MTR23/24, Metzler MEZ4, Michelin 100X, Avon AV35/36). I decided to
get the Avons due to a good price. I also did a little enquiring about the
sizes and even wrote Avon. Here's a copy of my inquiry and their response:
Hi Daren
Your tyre choice is correct. Most tyre manufacturers recommend these
alternate sizings for the GTS. This is primarily because the rims sizes are
suitable for both the tyres and the machine handles acceptably on them. The
OE 130/60-17 tyre (similarly to 120/60) whilst ok, has insufficient damping
in the sidewall to cope with varying road conditions in comparison to a
120/70-17 size
