Long ago in my experienced past, I found out that some of the local
distributors would somehow allow gas to have as much water in it as the laws
and company regulations stated. So your always going to get some water.
Maybe not enough to hurt performance maybe it will. Could be that those that
got some low grade gas now thinks that it was the lower octane and not the
water and junk that might have been in the storage tank.
Unfortunately some of your back road mom and pop places have gas that
gains even more water and degrades as it sits in the storage tanks. It would
be more water in higher priced gas because it sells less volume, than the
lower, so you just have to make a choice on the spot.
Remember at those new pumps there could be a good measurable amount of
some other grade of gas in the hose. It could mean that if you bought higher
octane gas you could possibly get a high percentage of a low grade, compared
to your total amount of purchase, if somebody had just gotten low grade
before you.
Just some reminders to ponder.
