Oops!
Sorry Fred--it just came out wrong. I agree with you.
I'm always embarrassed that we Americans (and me
specifically) don't feel it's important to learn other
languages. I'm always amazed that when I tell people
I spent 3 months riding through western Europe that
they say "Well, at least you didn't have to worry
about the language, since everyone there speaks
English." Not only is it not true (in the
countryside, I spent a lot of time pointing and making
signs with my hands, like rubbing my belly for
"hungry" and putting my hands together under my head
for "sleep"), it's incredibly self-centered. In my
experience, even in England where the language is the
same, people tend to see Americans as loud, rude jerks
who feel they have to convert people to their own
language and custom. I always got a good reaction
when I made an honest effor to learn another person's
language or custom.
I did notice the asker was Dutch, but since I happened
to know the same trick, I thought I'd guess at the
translation in case someone else didn't know the trick
and didn't want to ask. I've heard lots of people
receommending sanding the edges of tires.
So, I think we agree on everything Fred! Probably
even the malevolent effects of American (pop) cultural
imperialism. If we ever meet up I'll buy you a beer
and tell you about my experience in Ceske Budovice in
the Czech Republic and just how embarrassed I was to
be American.
