My recollection says that either the owners manual or the service manual
says to NOT use the handlebars as a tie down point. I just looked for such
a reference and could not find one. It may have been the mechanic who set
the bike up (and yes he's GTS trained). It seems to me that he said there
were points UNDER the bar to use as tie downs, but not the bar itself. If
you look under the silver "crown" where the bars attach, on the clutch side,
you'll see a tube that is about 3/4" in diameter and seems to connect the
crown to the steering stem. It is directly in back of where the clutch
"pipe" goes down through the cowling. There is a second one on the right
side, near where the brake "pipe" goes down through the cowling. My
recollection is that my mechanic said you could attach tie downs to those
items, but not to the handlebars. My guess is that if you put enough
down-pressure on the bars with the tie-downs, the crown could shatter and
then you'd be up a creek, and the front of the bike would no longer be
secured!
It seems to me (and I've never tied any bike down to anything) that if you
remove the seat, then you'll have much better places at least in the rear
and middle to tie down from (the frame rails under the seat).
I would also tie the outsides of the front swingarm down. But again, what
do I know?
