Henry,
Thanks for your thoughts. For legal reasons I'd
rather not discuss the details, but I sure have come
away an advocate of airbags. You see, I had none, and
I believe that if I had, it would have been a
walk-away no-injuries accident. I would have climbed
aboard the GTS and riden off to the Hoot. I was
driving a 1988 VW Golf made in Pennsylvania with the
"Passive Seatbelt System". How this one ever got by
the Feds, I'll never know. It consisted of one
shoulder strap attached to the door and ingenious
lower dashpadding. No lap belts, that's it! My fiance
has always bugged me about the car, saying "It's going
to kill you, get rid of it." I hate it when they're
right. What happened on impact was just what I always
thought would happen. I slid under the shoulder strap,
the steering wheel hitting my pelvis and tearing the
ureter tube away from the kidney. My knees hit the
padded dash apparently planned by the engineers. The
plastic casing around the steering wheel was broken on
impact and there were the two nice indentations where
my knees connected with the lower dash. Internal
injuries can be tricky. I, as the five other occupants
in the other vehicle, refused medical assistance at
the scene of the accident. I went home that evening
and discovered blood in my urine. After a quick
shower, it was off to the ER. Anyway it looks as
though I'm making good progress. I don't usually ride
much down here from July-Sept., so I'm not missing any
quality riding time. Down here our next event is
Biketoberfest in Oct., this time now is basically our
off season, opposite from what I was used to in N.Y.
