Gentle? :^) I usually give it a good open handed smack from the top and
catch it in my other hand. Same brute force when putting it back on. Hold
the mirror in place with one hand and give it an open handed WHACK from the
side. A little grease on the nipples helps the process. Not mine, the
bikes! :^) Backoff SAs!!!!

It is not difficult to pull the mirrors off without
damaging them. Just be gentle. I replaced the stocks
with the R1100 versions you can get from Whiteline in
Germany. Of all the changes I've made to my GTS
(seat, handlebars, hard cases, etc.) this is the most
beneficial. The bike is safer, more enjoyable to
ride, and in my opinion, actually looks cooler.
