It is not difficult to pull the mirrors off without damaging them. Just be gentle. I replaced the stocks with the R1100 versions you can get from Whiteline in Germany. Of all the changes I've made to my GTS (seat, handlebars, hard cases, etc.) this is the most beneficial.
