Without it operational! Very easily done by putting the bike in gear while
it's on the centerstand. The ABS computer sense an impossible speed
differential between the front and back wheels and shuts down as indicated
by the blinking ABS light. It stays that way until you cycle the ignition
Off/On. The test was performed by Lawrence Grodsky.

Without it "engaged" or without it operational??  If the system is still
operational, not engaging it requires you to hold back LESS than the ABS
needs to kick in.  It's the act of going beyond the ABS limits that will
give you better time/distance without ABS.

Also.........may say something about the test riders.  Ooooops, that
sounds like a potshot.   :)
