Dell has a nice range of laptops, personally, I'd go with the Latitude C600 or C800, builtin modem, NIC, decent size HDs, 15" screen if I remember right.
Fairly light too. Not sure about the price though, unless you look on Ubid or Dell Refurbs. They come with Windows2000 which is actually excellent, only the professional version though so you can't run a webserver off of it. :) On the other hand, you don't need to login with password either.
