Shawn (and the rest of the list) I was wondering....has your bike always consumed an unreasonable amount of oil? My '93 GTS has 40K miles and doesn't consume oil at any noticeable rate. I had been using 15-40w (oil for tractors and diesels) up until the last oil change. I changed to the 15-50w Mobile 1 and hated the way the bike "felt" (hard to explain). I changed to the 10-40w Mobile 1 within a week, which I found to have a better viscosity for the bike and gear box. I will be returning to the 15-40w (Shell Rotelle-T) this weekend. All comments are welcome.

I am afflicted with it too, recently changed to Mobil 1 full synthetic, 15-50W. On my thanksgiving wkend tour, which was about 1,800 mi I went thru a little more than a quart. And that was running at moderate speeds (60-85) in cool weather (50-60 degrees). So it was no better than the synthetic blends (Golden Spectro) I was running previously. The part no for the K&N air filters was for the individual cones (replacing the air box). Removing the air box also requires you to add a small oil mist filter or crankcase filter. http://www.knpowersports.com/docs/products.html they make several just based on the dia of the hose you need to mount it in. Your local dealer or hot rod shop should be able to get it for you. You bring up a good idea though - just add the mist filter to the hose inside the air box. Thanks, I think I'll try that. As to your other questions, I haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn either, so I can't be of much help -- Dave Biasotti // Fremont, CA Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 11:27:46 -0500 From: Shawn Pearsall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Question for Dave B. Dave: A few months ago you posted a part number on the list for a K&N filter that would go inline with the breather tube to help reduce the oil consumption on the GTS above 5000RPM's. I have a specific problem (still haven't fixed it) due to a shop selling me a new front sprocket that said 17 tooth...I didn't count...when it was actually 16! Now getting to 5000 RPM's is a normal task. It raises the RPM level by about 450RPM's so 75MPH is now above 5000. I have been using more oil now for about 2500 miles (to busy to order the part replacement when I think about it..it's two late) Questions for Dave & the group: 1) Is there a way to remove oil from the Cat after it has been impregnated? 2) What is the part number for the K&N in line filter? Any where have you found it? 3) Would sticking an aftermarket straight PVC valve in line accomplish similar task? We're really only talking about providing some back pressure here to stop the oil from hitting the air filter canister? I'm not a rocket scientist...and it's been awhile since I slept at a Holiday Inn Express!
