I use the same oil as Henry. I probably use about 2-4 oz every 1000 miles, so I have to add oil after 1500-2000 miles. Usually only 1 addition between changes, which I do about every 3k miles.
PS- I use the same Amsoil Series 2000 20w-50 in my boat, which has a 430 hp 454 (7.4 liter). I change the oil in the boat every 50 hours (recommended is 100 hours), and there is NO perceptable oil consumption. Late model 454's are known as notorious oil consumers, so my boat engine is unusual, but then in trucks etc. a 5w-30 is normally used. Generally speaking, the lighter the oil, the more consumption. In my Suburban with a 454, I use Amsoil 5w-30, and it uses a quart every 3000 miles. According to GM, oil consumption for a 454 at up to 1 quart per 1000 miles is considered acceptable, and is the trade off for engine longevity and reduced upper cylinder wear (according to my buddy the Chevy technician). If you are concerned about clutch slippage, then use the Amsoil 20w-50 Motorcycle oil, which has a different additive package. Some friction modifiers found in SG/SH/SJ rated oils can cause some additional clutch looseness/slippage, but I have not had that proboem. PSS- the 20w-50 may cause hard starting in temps below 35 F / 1 C, but is ok to use down to 20 F. -----Original Message----- From: Henry S. I can't say that I have the oil consumption problems that others seem to have, OTOH, perhaps I don't ride long enough to see it develop. I change the oil 1ce/year and the filter 2x. Regards, Henry S.
