Hi Jussi,

I think the ATV voltage is that applied by the TPS to the ECU. The Yamaha
Technical note specifies a setting of between 0.625v and 0.630v at 1000 RPM.

If this fails to cure the problem they then suggest 0.620v. The TPS is
maddeningly sensitive to movement, and you will change the ATV voltage just
by loosening and tightening the TPS adjustment screws. I gave up at 0.622v.

To make probing easier, I had the ECU out of its metal box and wired backup
to the bike so that I could probe for the required voltage.

Yamaha have helpfully labelled the PCB with all the signal names so it's
easy to see the line you need to probe.

If you are looking at the ECU with the larger connector on the left and the
smaller connector on the right, then the ATV signal is on the smaller
connector, top row, 3rd in from the left.

However it's MUCH easier (though time consuming) to whip off the ECU cover
and probe the signal from the back of the socket.

Regards,

David

Interesting indeed - if it really helped.

May be "simple" to ask, but what is meant with "ATV -voltage"? (I still
don't
have a service manual..)

BTW, my GTS -93 doesn't suffer enormous surging that badly, but it's
definately
difficult to maintain constant, light torque when not really loading the
engine
(low speed cruising..) chak-chak-chak....

Guys,

I have been thinking about chopping in my GTS for something newer, smoother,
lighter and yes faster.

Got her 1st MOT today, so I spent about an hour sitting on Blackbirds,
Futuras and a sweet little R1100S.

Now I know that the BB will be faster, the Futura is so light and the BMW
will last forever, but none of them quite have the all encompassing riding
experience of the GTS. The BB will get me nicked, the Futura will cost a
fortune to fix and the BMW is crampt.

However until 8pm this evening all the above held one thing over my beloved
GTS. None of them surged..!

Now on Saturday, David Jerome sent me the Surge fix that Yamaha published in
1994. The "set your ATV voltage to 0.620v." Took 2 hrs to remove the
fairings, play with the ECU and TPS and then put it all back together.

Now she ain't perfect..3.2K rpm in 1st gear still yields a shimmy. But damn,
I can hold a constant speed in 2nd or 3rd below 5Krpm, and my right hero
blob proves it. We just kept going round and round and round, lower and
lower, hee hee hee.

Hope to bugger of the France very soon, now I can enjoy the GTS once more.

Regards,

David
