Yeah, you need to do the bottom one also. You also need to do the
shoock pivots.

Yes, you can lube everything with the bike on the center stand. You'll
need to support the swingarm so you don't overflex the ball joints.
Thinking about it, if you leave the shock attached while you do the
swingarm you might be able to get at the bearings & not have to support
the swingarm - I haven't tried this.

I used Exxon molydisulfide grease. MoS2 is a very good solid lubricant
- better than graphite. You don't want a real heavy grease, you do want
a solid lubricant additive to provide a margin of safety, and obviously
you want something that resists washout.

Hi Bill,

Oh god so I need to do the bottom ones as well!!!!!

Any hints here?

I am assuming from the emailed instructions that the bike can be worked
on while on its centre stand, and that the from swing arm does not need
to be supported or anything special while I work on the suspension.

Finally what grease should I use? The stuff I pump into my MGB
suspension every month?

Regards,

David

Short term fix is the same as long term fix.

It's the bearings. They get dry (no grease) and sometimes rust. I
don't remember any special tools, just sockets & wrenches - a torque
wrench is nice but not absolutely necessary. One side has a rubber boot
- get a second one and put it on the other side (requires minor
modification - plug a drain hole & make a new one). Whether or not
you'll need new bearings depends on how bad yours are & how anal
retentive you are. I cleaned mine off, greased them & left them in. They
were dry & slightly rusty put not pitted or galled.

If the top ones are squeaking, you also need to grease the bottom ones.

As I remember, the whole job took an afternoon for a first time. A lot
of that was spent double checking - I am fairly anal about my bike.

Hope that helps
Bill

Guys,

Having battled and sort of won with the infamous GTS surging, the little
bugger has now shifted to a major squeaking fit from the upper A arm
assembly on the front suspension especially at each lock.

I have archived the detailed repair guide provided by follow GTS owners
on this list (THANK YOU), so you can spare us all that extra email.

My questions are....

1) I have a service booked for the end of July is there a short term fix
for the squeaking that will see me clear for 4 weeks?

2) How much extra time should I tell my dealer to set aside to do the
job properly?

3) I am tempted to do this work my self, but fate tends to conspire
against me on these things. As an example, every time I had the fairing
off the GTS to adjust the TPS it would start to rain. Fairing on rain
stops, fairing off rain starts. Is this a day, weekend, week or long
term project?

4) If I go for it, what special tools would people recommend, and do I
need to order any new parts?

Regards,

David
