David,
I recentley priced up a genuine Yamaha Cat from North West Superbikes in
Preston. 602 plus v.a.t. (tax at 17.5%). A complete Renegade systems only
around 700 I think. So I know what I'll be doing when the Cat eventually
falls to bits. (In Built Obsolencence I think they call it).

Having said that I've just had some work done on mine. Found the remains of
2 of the clamps in the belly pan. Took the bike back to the dealers to sort
out (still under 3 month used bike warranty).

What the mechanic did was remove the cat, shot blast it to remove all the
surface crap and flaking metal, cut off the remains of the four inlets,
welded on four new pieces of tube of a suitable length and diameter, coated
everything in heat proof paint and reassembled. A first I though he'd just
replaced the cat as he'd done such a good job of it.

Oh yeah my bikes a 96 model with 23000 on the clock. But certainly for the
previous three years it has lived outside all year round, at Gt Yarmouth by
the North Sea coast. (Nice salty environment).
